Vehicle emissions harm the air we breathe and contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, which is a significant component of smog. According to the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) in Maryland, residents travel 135 million miles every day, a quantity that grows every year. In an effort to curb air pollution, emissions tests in Baltimore and the rest of the state may help to prevent hazardous chemicals from vehicles by making sure your car is running effectively.

In 2007, Maryland became the first state to implement California’s Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) program. California’s higher tailpipe and greenhouse gas limits were implemented by Maryland in 2012, and the program applies to model years 2015 through 2025 and establishes new emission requirements for criteria pollutants and greenhouse gasses.

The VEIP schedules tests, then notifies clients when their vehicle is due for necessary emissions tests and conducts them at various sites. The VEIP inspections are necessary for all vehicles registered in designated Maryland counties unless they qualify for the exempt list.

Emissions tests in Baltimore: fees and charges

  • VEIP Test Fee $14.00
  • VEIP Self-Serve Kiosk $10.00
  • VEIP Penalty Late Fee $15.00

The late fee is assessed the day after the due date or the “valid through date” has passed; it will be considered late every four calendar weeks (28 days) after. A vehicle’s initial retest after repair is free

Emissions tests in Baltimore: required testing

  • Gas cap test
  • On-board diagnostic (OBD) test
  • Tailpipe test (idle test)

Depending on your vehicle, some or all tests will be administered. The most common emissions tests in Baltimore are the tailpipe testing, but there are two others: the city- and state-run.

Gas cap test

Pretty straightforward, the purpose of the gas cap test is to verify the strength of your vehicle’s gas cap. Fuel vapors will leak from the tank due to a fractured cap or missing seal, lowering fuel economy, increasing the carbon footprint, and costing you money at the pump. A missing cap not only creates the same problems but also puts your vehicle at risk of catching fire. Over the course of a year, a missing or improperly placed gas cap can cost you up to 30 gallons. That’s a significant quantity of fuel going to waste.

OBD test

The on-board diagnostic (OBD) test detects problems that waste gasoline, limit engine life, and need potentially costly repairs throughout your vehicle. The OBD test informs you whether your car is contributing to poor air quality by producing too many pollutants. The system is examined to see whether any emissions control components are malfunctioning, causing the vehicle’s emissions to exceed permissible levels.

Tailpipe or idle test

While the engine is resting idle, the emissions of the vehicle are examined. Because of their vehicle architecture, the idle test is more suited for older model vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. This is the most common emissions test performed across the country to monitor output levels.
