Nissan, headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, is a multinational firm that produces high-quality automobiles under the Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun brands all over the world. Their cars, trucks, and SUVs are developed with the latest safety and convenience features in mind for the contemporary person or family. One of the higher-rated brands by critics and consumers alike, it’s one of the industry’s best-selling and prominent brands across the globe. While they’ve always been headquartered in Japan, where are Nissans made?

Nissan Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational car company that produces and distributes automobiles under the Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun brands. It was founded around the turn of the twentieth century and is the world’s 6th largest carmaker after brands like Toyota, General Motors, Volkswagen Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Ford. It’s currently a part of the Renault–Nissan Alliance, which is the world’s fourth-biggest carmaker when combined. In China, Russia, and Mexico, Nissan is the most popular Japanese brand.

In 2014, Nissan became the largest automaker in North America, and as of 2018 was the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer with more than 320,000 all-electric vehicles sold worldwide. Like many other imported brands in the United States and North America, drivers may feel that a vehicle designed and manufactured overseas can give it higher quality than its American competitors, but where are Nissans made?

Where are Nissans made throughout the world?

  • Tochigi produces high-performance vehicles such as the Nissan GTR and 370Z
  • Oppama plant produces smaller every-level automobiles, like the Versa
  • Kyushu manages the industrial devices and crossover SUVs like the Rogue and Murano
  • Canton and Smyrna facilities produce a wide range of Nissan vehicles, from the Altima and Maxima to the Titan and Frontier pickup trucks
  • Aguas Calientes is in charge of constructing the Sentra

Nissan North American vehicles are largely produced at one of six factories in Japan, the United States, and Mexico. Oppama, Kyushu, and Tochigi are among the Japanese manufacturing facilities, whereas Canton, Mississippi, and Smyrna, Tennessee are among the American manufacturing facilities.

The GTR and 370Z are two of Nissan’s most powerful cars currently on the market. Both of these vehicles are built in Nissan’s Tochigi plant, which is home to highly experienced experts capable of handcrafting technical engine pieces. The Oppama manufacturing plant is responsible for the production of the smaller and more entry-level vehicles like the Versa, Cube, and some higher-performance vehicles like the 350Z coupe. Nissan’s Kyushu plant completes the Japanese industrial landscape and handles the production of the Rogue and Murano crossover SUV model lines.

The majority of Nissan’s passenger sedans and SUV models are produced in Nissan North America’s Smyrna and Canton factories. These vehicles range from the Altima and Maxima sedans through the Titan, Frontier, Armada, and Xterra, as well as the rest of Nissan’s truck and SUV lineup. In addition to these, the Canton, Mississippi facility produces the Nissan Quest minivan. Sentra models are special in that they are made in Aguas Calientes, Mexico, the only North American product manufacturing factory that is not in Japan or America.

Nissan cars were first assembled in the United States in 1983 at the Smyrna assembly plant in Tennessee, which presently employs 8,400 people and has a manufacturing capacity of around 640,000 vehicles per year. The Nissan Canton vehicle assembly plant in Mississippi is a bit smaller than its American counterpart and employs over 6,400 people and can build 450,000 vehicles per year. It debuted in 2003 and in March of 2018, the Canton assembly factory celebrated the production of its 4 millionth car.

Nissan factories in the United States build more than 1 million automobiles per year and employ more than 22,000 people, including 17,000 workers in the manufacturing sector. Over the course of 35 years of manufacturing activities in the United States, the company has never had a full-time employee laid off.

Where are Nissans made: the Dechard plant

  • It employs over 1,500 people
  • 1.4 million engines made
  • 1.4 million crankshaft forgings made
  • Over 450,000 cylinder block castings are made annually
  • Over 10 million engines have been built in its two decades of business

The Altima, Maxima, LEAF, Pathfinder, and Rogue are now assembled at the Decherd Powertrain Assembly Plant. The plant opened in 1997, and the 1.1 million-square-foot complex completes a new Nissan engine every 19 seconds. It assembles engines for a variety of Nissan cars, including the Rogue, Altima, TITAN, Armada, and the all-electric LEAF’s electric motor.

Where are Nissans made: the Canton plant

The Canton Vehicle Assembly Factory in Canton, Mississippi, became Nissan North America’s most recent plant to open in 2003. It has now grown to a 4.7-million-square-foot, 1,038-acre plant that assembles vehicles for the domestic market in the United States as well as the worldwide market. Models built in the Canton plant include the Altima, Frontier, Murano, NV Cargo, TITAN, and TITAN XD.

While Nissan’s current product range is diverse, more than half of those destined for the North American market are made in the United States, with production split almost equally between Tennessee and Mississippi. If you drive a new Nissan, chances are it was produced in North America, according to current sales numbers.

Nissan is one of the most popular brands both domestically in Japan and across the globe. Particularly for its craftsmanship, affordability, and dependability, Nissan has been a consistent player in best selling vehicles for many years. It has a pretty large lineup for North American consumers and many are highly rated, and it may surprise some drivers to find out that most vehicles sold in the US are almost entirely produced here as well.

The answer to the question: “where are Nissans made?” may not be completely straightforward, but if you’re driving a vehicle in North America, there’s a good chance it was manufactured here unless it was specifically imported. Regardless, they are high-performing, durable, and consumer-friendly vehicles regardless of the main manufacturing site.
