There’s no shortage of cars and SUVs that we wish made it to the U.S. shores. One such vehicle was the small, compact car Toyota Yaris. The Yaris was previously sold in U.S. markets, but the low sales made Toyota decide to pull the small car out of the States. Later, Toyota created an SUV version of the Yaris called the Yaris Cross.

The Yaris Cross was reasonably late to the SUV boom, but this handsome SUV became one of the most popular models in the segment. On top of Toyota’s reputation for legendary reliability, the Yaris Cross offers an attractive hybrid powertrain option and a relatively spacious interior.

Today, we put the spotlight on the Yaris Cross interior, particularly with the 2022 model. What’s it like inside this stylish SUV? How many passengers can it accommodate? What about its tech and infotainment features? We’ll answer these questions and more.

Yaris Cross Interior Design and Layout

When it comes to interior design and layout, the Yaris Cross probably won’t be collecting awards anytime soon. With that said, the interior isn’t the most stylish out there and heavily borrows from its hatchback sibling. The entry-level model offers a decently stylish interior, but it could probably use some contrast stitching and accents because it’s relatively grayscale and uninspiring.

However, in the typical Toyota manner, the Yaris Cross interior looks and feels like it’s built to last. Although there are some cheap surfaces here and there, the touch points are soft enough without crossing into premium territory. Adding to the upmarket appeal, a strip of bronze trim runs through from the doors to the dash, which nicely breaks up the monotonous color palette. There’s also cool blue ambient lighting available on every model except the entry-level one.

In addition, the small-diameter steering wheel feels appropriate and solid. Likewise, the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is thoughtfully laid out, with the digital instrument cluster behind the wheel looking sharp and crisp.

The Yaris Cross looks and feels like an authentic Toyota, which means that the interior is well-made with a sense of solidarity. The lack of flimsy buttons/switches and loose components really help nail the sense of quality.

Yaris Cross Interior Features

One of the main advantages of the Yaris Cross over its small hatchback sibling is its higher driving position. This high eye-point and better visibility make the Yaris Cross enjoyable for the urban traveler. Trim-wise, the Yaris Cross is available in several versions: the entry-level Icon, which upgrades to Design, Excel, and the topmost trim, Dynamic. Toyota also offers the Premiere Edition spec that boasts plenty of extra features.

The entry-level Icon offers an automatic climate system, front and rear power windows, a rearview camera, an electronic parking brake, a six-speaker sound system, and more. The Design trim introduces split-folding rear seats, roof rails, rear privacy glass, and the aforementioned blue ambient cabin lighting.

The top-most trims, Excel and Dynamic, offer plenty of goodies, including auto-retracting door mirrors, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone climate system, and power lumbar adjustment for the driver. The Dynamic model boasts black fabric seat upholstery, with stylish contrasting vertical stripes at the center of the seats.

Finally, the Premiere Special Edition comes with a 10-inch heads-up display that shows critical details like vehicle speed, safety warnings, navigation, and multimedia information.

Yaris Cross Passenger and Cargo Spaces

Due to the sloping roofline and tight door openings, entering the rear cabin of the Yaris Cross can be awkward. Having said that, sitting three adult passengers in the back is asking a lot from this small, compact SUV. Meanwhile, you should have no trouble fitting two adult passengers (not taller) or small children in the back of the Yaris Cross.

The knee and legroom tell a similar story, as they’re too tight for tall adults. Up front, the space is less of an issue. However, the Yaris will still have a tough time competing with other compact SUVs. We recognize that the Yaris Cross is supposed to be a small family SUV meant to ferry kids within the city. However, while we’re not expecting something palatial, it could certainly use more wiggle room in the back seat.

As with the cargo space (or boot space for the European and Australian readers), the Yaris Cross offers 397 liters or roughly 14 cubic feet of cargo area for luggage. With the back seats folded, the usable cargo area balloons to 1,097 liters or 38.74 cubic feet. The back seats of the entry-level model can be folded in a 60:40 configuration, while higher trims have 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats.

The available power tailgate makes it a breeze to access the cargo area via the kick sensor. Thus, you don’t have to put down your stuff to open the tailgate while loading. There’s also a Flex Belt accessory option which is handy for securing small items.

Yaris Cross Tech and Safety

The new Yaris Cross comes with the latest multimedia platform by Toyota called SmartConnect. You can play around with the system via the 9-inch high-definition touchscreen display that includes a SIM-card slot for an uninterrupted connection. However, you have to keep in mind that the SmartConnect system is not free and only standard on higher trims.

With the new SmartConnect technology, you can wirelessly stream your favorite music, podcasts, and news via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The available navigation feature connects to the cloud to ensure an “always on” operation, which makes sense if you’re traveling in more remote areas. In addition, the SmartConnect feature also enables you to remotely control certain features like the climate system, locking/unlocking the doors, and hazard lights.

For safety, the Yaris Cross interior is outfitted with the Toyota Safety Sense, a driver assistance suite. Thus, you can expect the usual collection of safety and driver assistance features, including:

  • Pre-collision warning
  • Lane departure alert
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane trace assist
  • Road sign detection
  • Automatic high beams
  • And many more…

On higher trims, added safety features are available, including rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.
