One of Jeep’s biggest claims to fame is being one of the few vehicle manufacturers that keep manufacturing in the United States. They’re famously American-made cars, which is a big part of why some of their most dedicated customers buy them.
Of course, that only works if Jeeps are actually made in the United States.
With global markets and supply chains, it’s easier than ever for companies, including major car manufacturers, to all or part of their production to other parts of the world.
In fact, with a lot of more complicated products, like computers, cars, and a lot of technology, it’s impossible for the whole product to be manufactured in one place. Many of the most important components behind our favorite possessions come from all over the world.
So, where are Jeeps made? Are they as American-made as they seem, or is the story of how a Jeep comes to exist a little more complicated?
Where Are Jeeps Made?
Well, there is good news. Jeeps do still put their cars together right here in the U.S.A., and their main manufacturing plants are spread across a couple of different states and cities, which makes them one of the bigger manufacturing companies that still maintains factories in the United States.
However, that doesn’t mean that everything that goes into making a Jeep happens in the United States.
Because Jeep is a growing international brand, and because it’s often easier and more cost-effective to manufacture closer to where you’re going to sell the vehicles, Jeep also maintains 10 factories elsewhere in the world.
For consumers looking specifically for an American-made product though, it’s not too hard to find them. Jeeps sold in the United States still largely come from American factories, and at least some of the international models are designed for different market demands and aren’t really sold here.
So, if you’re buying a Jeep in the United States, chances are it was made in the United States.
Here are some of the most important manufacturing plants Jeep Maintains in the United States and across the world.

Jeep Plants In The United States
Even though Jeep does some of its manufacturing outside the United States, we figured we’d start with the American factories since they’re the most impactful on the U.S. market. Don’t worry though, we’ll cover the global locations in the next section.
If you’re wondering where Jeeps are made because you’re thinking about getting one or want to know where your current Jeep was manufactured, you’re in luck! Many models of Jeep are made at specific factories, so, after reading this list, you might even know where your Jeep was built.
Toledo, Ohio
The Toledo factory is one of the most important plants Jeep has. This is the factory that first produced Jeep’s military vehicle line and has remained the company headquarters ever since. Jeep has changed ownership several times since they were producing vehicles for the U.S. military, but none of the new owners have ever moved the headquarters.
Jeep was even owned by Chrysler at one point, but the company is currently held by Stellaris.
At the moment, the Toledo factory is primarily used to produce Jeep Wranglers, after having been rebuilt back in 2006. However, the facility is large, and a lot of business happens in Toledo that isn’t directly related to the manufacturing plant or the production of Wranglers.
So, even though Toledo’s Jeep company primarily produces a single model, it’s still on the most important factories and business campuses Jeep owns.
Detroit, Michigan
Detroit is a famous car factory town and unfortunately has suffered from the loss of some of its factories and a decrease in the amount of manufacturing that happens in the United States and specifically in Detroit itself.
However, Jeep at least is still there.
In fact, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been made in Detroit, ever since the model was introduced back in 1993.
The Detroit factory also produced the Jeep Commander, while that model was still in production, and also handles the manufacturing of the Dodge Durango.
Now, for the sake of clarity, Detroit is an assembly plant, which means that they put vehicles together, but they don’t manufacture the individual parts for their vehicles here. Those parts are sourced elsewhere.
Belvidere, Illinois
The Belvidere factory is arguably a little less important than the Toledo or Detroit factories, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still a big part of Jeep’s U.S. operation.
Currently, the Belvidere factory also produces Jeep Cherokee, but it’s also produced a wide range of other Jeep models, as well as some Chrysler and Dodge models in the past.

Global Jeep Plants
Here are a few of the Jeep plants you’ll find globally, as Jeep expands its market and builds more of a global supply chain.
Guangzhou, China
The factory in Guangzhou is one of the more recent factories under Jeep’s umbrella and was acquired in 2015.
The Chinese versions of the Jeep Cherokee, Renegade, and Compass have all been produced at this plant since 2015.
Melfi, Italy
The Melfi factory was one that was acquired while Jeep was owned by Chrysler, and a variety of both Jeep and Chrysler vehicles were produced there.
These days, the Melfi factory is mostly responsible for the Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, and Fiat 500x. That’s right, depending on what model of Jeep you’re getting, you might actually be buying a vehicle that was assembled in Italy, and then shipped to the dealership you bought it from.
Don’t worry too much though, Jeep doesn’t have big quality differences between factories. While there are a few differences between models that are designed for different markets, Jeep uses the same basic parts and design for all the vehicles sold in a specific area.

Goiana, Brazil
The Goiana plant is a huge factory. Research and development, a huge employee training center, a testing track, and other facilities all live here, and the Goiana plant has won Jeep a lot of Brazilian business.
Thanks to this factory, Brazil buys the second most Jeep vehicles of any country. The United States buys the most.
Stamping and assembly both happen here, along with the other roles of the factory. It’s probably one of the factories with the most different roles in one place, thanks to the large size of the campus.
That said, even with this large factory outside the United States, Jeep still has enough of a U.S. presence to be a good U.S. company.
