These days, it can be overwhelming to navigate the lineups of some automakers when you’re on the hunt for your next SUV. That’s especially true with the debut of the all-new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder and how it compares to the 2022 Nissan Rogue.

Nissan Rogue vs. Nissan Pathfinder, which SUV gets a spot in your garage?

Both are popular and feature-packed SUVs, but each caters to specific needs. Today, we compare the Nissan Rogue vs. Nissan Pathfinder, and here’s how they stack up.

Exterior Features

The 2022 Pathfinder is one of the largest Nissans, and it towers over the more compact Rogue. The Pathfinder benefits from a significant facelift by combining classic and modern design elements. The slim taillights and floating roof are nice modern touches that provide the SUV with an updated look. The V-motion grille and C-shaped LED daytime running lights give the Pathfinder a rugged front.

All Pathfinder editions get LED headlights and taillights, but only the SL and Platinum trims have LED foglights. In addition, lower trims get 18-inch alloy wheels, while 20-inch black alloys are standard with the Platinum edition. Customers looking for a panoramic sunroof will have to get the top-most trim, Platinum. 

On the flip side, the 2022 Rogue retains the same design makeover as the previous year. The Rogue sports a safe but attractive design that will hardly shake up the two-row, compact crossover segment. The Rogue SUV features handsome styling with chiseled lines and a couple of familiar Nissan styling elements like the trademark V-motion grille and split headlights.

The Rogue offers several exterior features like active grille shutters, underbody covers, and front air curtains that improve aerodynamics and minimize wind noise. You’ll have to go with the 2022 Nissan Rogue Sport for a more sophisticated and sportscar-inspired style.

WINNER: Both SUVs have robust exterior designs, so it all comes down to personal preference.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The new Rogue ditched the old naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine in favor of a new 1.5-liter three-cylinder powertrain mated to a new Xtronic CVT. The more energetic engine capable of 201 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque is a considerable 11% power increase from the previous powertrain.

The standard drivetrain is FWD, and all trims can be upgraded to all-wheel for an additional $1,500. Despite the turbocharged engine, the new Rogue doesn’t require premium fuel which severely helps its fuel economy.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine capable of doling out 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. Despite having the same engine as last year, the Pathfinder uses a new nine-speed transmission system that feels quick, responsive, and hits 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds - a very good time in the midsize SUV segment.

On top of good on-road performance, the Pathfinder shines in off-road duties. The 2022 Pathfinder can haul up to 6,000 lbs with features like Tow Mode and Trailer Sway modes when fully equipped. As expected, it’s more than a capable off-road machine, thanks to its “Intelligent 4WD,” as dubbed by Nissan.

The 2022 Pathfinder has EPA-estimated ratings of 21/26/23 mpg city/highway/combined for FWD and 21/27/23 mpg for AWD. Conversely, the 2022 FWD Rogue has EPA ratings of 3037 mpg city/highway and 2835 mpg for AWD.

WINNER: Performance-wise, the Pathfinder crushes the Rogue, as they’re not even in the same weight class. However, the Rogue is the clear winner in fuel economy.

Interior and Cargo Space

The Pathfinder’s interior has received a much-needed update. Gone is the dated last-gen cabin and replaced with a more modern and truck-like interior. The top Platinum trim takes up a notch or two with semi-aniline leather and sophisticated diamond contrast stitching. Comfort is also on-point with soft, upholstered surfaces and Zero Gravity front seats.

The Pathfinder is an eight-seater SUV, but with the available second-row captain chairs, the seating capacity is down to seven. Like most three-row SUVs, the third row is best reserved for kids and teens due to a relatively cramped space. Moreover, this SUV boasts best-in-class front legroom at 44.3 inches and 42.3 inches of headroom.

The Pathfinder offers 16.6 cu-ft of cargo in the trunk area with all the seats up. With the third-row folded, the space opens up to 45 cu-ft and increases to 80.5 cubes with both second and third-row seats folded. This time around, Nissan has included more storage solutions like storage cubbies, a large bin underneath the console, door pockets, and more.

Meanwhile, last year’s makeover has benefited the new Rogue well. The modern interior design heavily borrows from the Altima sedan and features a bi-level dashboard, soft-touch materials, etc. One of the interior highlights is the Zero Gravity front seats designed to maximize comfort.

The Rogue comfortably seats five people with plenty of head, shoulder, and legroom. The Rogue has 36.5 cu-ft of cargo space behind the second-row with folded third-row seats. Folding the second-row seats opens up 74.1 cu-ft of space, only several cubes fewer than the Pathfinder.

WINNER: Both SUVs have modern interior design and plenty of creature comforts. For passenger and cargo room, the winner depends on whether you require a two or three-row SUV.

Infotainment and Safety Features

Standing proud and tall at the center is the Rogue’s 8.0-inch touchscreen display and a larger 9.0-inch standard upgrade with the SL and Platinum models. Standard connectivity features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Optional high-end features such as in-dash navigation and a premium Bose stereo system are also available.

For safety, the 2022 Rogue wasn’t rated by the IIHS yet but received a 4-star rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features include blind-spot warning, high beam assist, lane departure warning, auto emergency braking, etc. Nissan’s semi-autonomous driving tech ProPilot Assist is available as well.

The Pathfinder may come with an eight or nine-inch touchscreen display like the Rogue. Sophisticated features like a 12.3-inch widescreen digital gauge and heads-up display are available as add-ons. However, we’re docking a point for the Pathfinder because Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support are only available on the 9.0-inch screen.

The 2022 Pathfinder boasts a 5-star rating from the NHTSA but missed out on the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. All Pathfinder trims get Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite, including blind-spot warning, rear-cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, etc.

WINNER: The Rogue’s infotainment system seems to be a better package than Pathfinder’s. However, the Pathfinder gains a point for better safety features and ratings.
