The Edge is Ford’s “Goldilocks” crossover, slotted between the compact Escape and larger mid-sized Explorer. This popular member of the Ford lineup is an alternative to the Chevrolet Blazer, Nissan Murano, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Honda Passport. Buyers often choose these vehicles because they want extra space but don’t need three rows. A spacious interior and ample cargo room are also sought after by used car shoppers, making the Ford Edge a strong candidate. But buyers will want to know how long Ford Edges last.
Introduced for the 2007 model year, the two-row Ford Edge rode on the automaker’s CD3 platform (underpinnings designed by Mazda and shared with the Ford Fusion) and was powered by a 265-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine. The Edge offered a comfortable ride and seating for five passengers, with available amenities like Ford’s SYNC infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, and heated leather seats.
In 2011, Ford refreshed the Edge with updated exterior styling, including a new front fascia and grille. However, the underlying mechanical components, like the engine and chassis, mainly were carried over unchanged. Ford launched the second-generation Edge for 2015, moving to a new platform. This allowed for increased interior room, updated technology features, and improvements in noise, vibration, and harshness. Engine options consisted of a standard 2.0L EcoBoost 4-cylinder, an available 2.7L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6, and a normally aspirated 3.5L V6. For 2019, Ford updated the Edge with revised styling, including a new grille, front and rear fascias, and standard LED headlights across all trim levels. Under the skin, the Edge carried over unchanged mechanically. Now nearing the end of its second generation, the Edge remains in Ford’s product range amid a hotly contested midsize crossover segment.
Ford has hinted that 2024 will mark the last model year of Edge in the U.S. The Canadian factory where the Edge has been built since its debut will be needed for a new all-electric crossover that the automaker is planning to roll out in 2025.

RepairPal ranks the Edge 11th out of 26 mid-sized SUVs (and a 3.5 out of 5.0 reliability rating—an above-average level), but this is an overall finding for all model years. Separating this review by generation provides more accurate information about the Ford Edge.

The first year of an all-new vehicle can be filled with gremlins and other bugs. It’s a situation that didn’t escape the 2007 Ford Edge, the inaugural model year. Often, these troubles get worked out in the following year. However, the abundance of engine and transmission problems didn’t subside until 2009. In fact, Carcomplaints.com calls the 2007 and 2008 Edge “clunkers,” which doesn’t bode well for longevity.
The 2011-2013 editions are especially troubling because of the extreme number of reports (hundreds per model year) about electric system issues. Yes, this doesn’t involve the engine or transmission, but the sheer volume of complaints about the electric system is worrisome. Further, the 2013 gets labeled as another clunker thanks to electrical and engine problems.
A review of online for-listings (as of October 7, 2023) offers clues about the lifespan of the first-generation Ford Edge. Of the 1,762 Edges available for the 2007-2014 model years, 105 (about 6%) had over 200,000 miles of use. Of these, 11 had mileage above 250,00 miles.
When considering the first-generation Edge’s spotty reliability history and the lack of high-mileage examples, it’s hard to see most of these Fords lasting beyond 150,000 miles.
2015-Current Ford Edge Lifespan: 150,000-200,000 Miles
The “first-year” curse also shows itself for the 2015 Edge, the premier of the second generation. This is another model year that’s branded as a clunker. More owner reports about the engine continue through the 2018 model year. In particular, the 2017 Edge is especially bad. Not only does carcomplaints.com recommend avoiding this edition, but Consumer Reports ranks this model as a 1 (out of 5) for reliability.
Fortunately, the Edge shows an improvement in dependability starting with the 2019 model year. Engine-related complaints are down significantly, and Consumer Reports gives the 2020 and 2022 Edge a near-perfect 4 for reliability.

Yet, newer Edge editions (2019+) can add at least another 50,000 miles of usefulness.
