While companies like Tesla have shaken up the market via innovative technologies relatively quickly, some companies like Hyundai took a lifetime before they blew up into the household name that it is now. It took quite some time before Hyundai became a famous car brand. With vehicles like the Palisade, Tucson, and Santa Fe, it’s safe to say that the Korean automaker isn’t about to slow down anytime soon.

Enter the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the manufacturer’s very own venture into the all-electric market. The Ioniq 5 is an all-electric compact crossover that marks a new era for the Korean automaker. With unique, futuristic styling and innovative technology, the Ioniq 5 is set to conquer the EV space.

If you’re looking to get behind the wheel of the Ioniq 5, you’re probably wondering what’s inside. So for today’s post, we highlight the Hyundai Ioniq 5 interior and everything else you need to know. Let’s take a look!

Ioniq 5 Interior Design and Layout

For the lack of a better word, the Ioniq 5’s interior looks incredibly cool. The futuristic and cyberpunk-esque styling of the exterior has transitioned seamlessly into the cabin. Since EVs don’t need a transmission system and other space-hungry parts, Hyundai made a truly awe-inspiring interior design and layout with the Ioniq 5.

In addition, this EV boasts a delightfully minimalist design that makes the space more accessible and uncluttered. There are two large floating displays, and the driver-facing screen displays crucial information like battery life, range, speed, and more. The screen on the right is the central infotainment screen also shows the range and battery life and can display apps.

The Ioniq 5 also has a unique two-spoke steering wheel that gels well with the interior design. One of the most distinctive design elements of the interior is the blocks peppered all over the interior, including the steering wheel, doors, seats, and door sills. It’s a big, bright, and airy cabin, truly a nice place to be in.

However, the color palettes for the interior are somewhat limited. Plus, the futuristic design and layout of the interior may not resonate with people who prefer a more conventional cabin.

Ioniq 5 Interior Features

One look, and you know that the Ioniq 5 interior is a tech-savvy space with plenty of eco-friendly materials. One available feature that’s quite fancy is the heads-up display with augmented reality that shows digital navigation directions on the windshield. Also, the front seats can recline all the way to the back, and there’s even an optional calf rest for maximum relaxation during long trips. Other standard features include an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

As you go up the trim levels, you’ll have access to even more fancy features like H-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, second-row HVAC vents, power windows, heated steering wheel, 64-color ambient lighting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, etc.

As you might expect, the topmost Limited trim boasts near-luxury features like the Vision roof (basically a moonroof), an 8-way power passenger seat, a driver-seat memory system, a sliding center console, and more.

Ioniq 5 Passenger and Cargo Spaces

From the outside, the Ioniq 5 looks like a small hatchback SUV, but its interior is surprisingly roomy. This midsize crossover SUV should have no problem accommodating a family of five with its 106.5 cubic feet of passenger space. The driver and front passenger enjoy 39.8 inches of headroom and 41.7 inches of legroom, while rear passengers have 38.7 inches and 39.4 inches of headroom and legroom, respectively.

Overall, the Ioniq 5 offers a lounge-like cabin, with plenty of space for all passengers to ride comfortably. Plus, the optional sliding center console on the Limited model opens up the space even more.

The Ioniq 5 is no slouch regarding cargo space, but it’s not a class leader either. The SUV features a default 27.2 cu-ft of space behind the second row, which is lower than the segment leaders like Volkswagen ID.4 at 30.3 inches and Ford Mustang Mach-E at 29.7 inches. With the rear seats folded, the cargo space expands to 59.3 inches. In addition, the Ioniq 5 also features a 0.85 cu-ft of space in the front storage compartment – an excellent solution for storing emergency kits and charging cables.

Unfortunately, the Ioniq 5’s hatchback design impedes its overall cargo space. The heavily raked rear window means that you’ll have difficulty fitting taller luggage or items because you can’t close the liftgate. Also, there is no front trunk for added cargo space, but it’s a deliberate design by Hyundai to allow more passenger space, which is a fair trade.

Ioniq 5 Tech and Safety

Believe it or not, the Ioniq 5 offers one of the best infotainment systems available. All models come with dual 12.3-inch displays, which look crisp and highly responsive. While we’re certainly not the biggest fan of touchscreen interfaces in cars, the Ioniq 5’s touchscreen controls and shifters are executed well. Fortunately, not everything is controlled via the touchscreen, and there are still physical buttons and switches for managing windows, the climate system, etc.

Like most modern infotainment systems, the Ioniq 5 come with integrated smartphone apps, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice recognition. Other standard features include a six-speaker system, Bluetooth, USB ports, satellite radio, and more.

Every Ioniq 5 comes with a wealth of standard safety and driver-assistance features, including:

  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Driver drowsiness monitoring
  • Rear occupant alert
  • And many more…

Furthermore, available safety and driver-assistance features are:

  • Blind spot view monitor
  • Surround-view parking camera
  • Perpendicular park assist
  • Automated lane changes

It’s worth mentioning that these safety features have worked great based on general feedback. The NHTSA has not yet rated the Ioniq 5 for safety, but it did receive a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS.

There’s a reason why the Ioniq 5 has been generating quite a buzz, not just in the EV market, but in general. We do know that its interior has managed to impress us.
