Even as more and more car manufacturers are making hybrid vehicles and Toyota diversifies its own lineup, the Prius is still the quintessential hybrid ride. For anyone looking to save money at the pump or reduce their emissions but can’t commit to an EV yet, the Prius is a great car to own.

And if you want to take maintenance into your own hands and replace the oil yourself, you’re going to need to know how to reset a Toyota Prius oil light. CoPilot is here to walk you through how to do that on your Prius.

First, you will have to turn on the electronics in your car without starting the engine. To do so, press the power button without pressing the brakes. Use the arrow buttons on the right side of the steering wheel to navigate to the gear icon.

Once there, use the up and down buttons to scroll down to “Vehicle Settings,” then press the center circle button on the right side of the steering wheel. From there, choose “Maintenance System,” then “Oil Maintenance.” When it asks you if you want to reset, press the center button to select “Yes.” Your oil meter should now be reset.

As with most modern cars, you will need to turn the car on before starting but do not start the engine. If your Prius uses an ignition key, turn the ignition from off to the first position. Or, if you have a push to start model, press the button once without pressing on the brakes. Make sure the odometer is displaying “Trip A,” and if it is not, press the “Trip” button on the right side of the steering wheel to change it back to “Trip A.”

Once that is right, turn the vehicle back off. While it is off, start holding down the “Trip” button with your left hand. With your right hand, switch the ignition on like last time while still holding down the “Trip” button. Hold the button down until the trip meter resets to zero. Your oil light will now be reset.

Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the first position to turn on the electronics but no the engine. If the display is showing the trip computer instead of the full odometer, press the “Trip” button (you will find it on the dashboard next to the hazard button below the monitor) until the odometer is displayed.

Now turn the car back off. With the car off, start holding down the “Trip” button, then keep holding it as you switch the electronics back on like you did earlier. Once the meter displays all zeroes, you can turn the car back off, and your oil light will be reset.
