The midsize SUV market is a battleground, teeming with contenders all vying for that sizable SUV and crossover market share. It’s not just about having a good product; it’s about having a vehicle that stands head and shoulders above the rest. One midsize SUV that indeed rose to the occasion is the Subaru Outback.

The Outback is a popular car with a rugged charm as one of its standout features. Specifically designed to handle the rough and tumble of family life, as well as outdoor adventures, this car has standard all-wheel drive and ample ground clearance. It is ideal for a wide range of activities, from snowy school runs to off-road camping trips. It’s no wonder Kelley Blue Book has named it one of the best family cars of 2023.

With the next model year on the horizon, Subaru fans eagerly anticipate a 2024 Subaru Outback redesign. Are Outback customers in for a treat with a significant facelift? Which features can you expect from the 2024 Outback? Let’s take a look!

Is There a 2024 Subaru Outback Redesign?

Yes. But we highly recommend managing your expectations because the 2024 Subaru Outback redesign isn’t exactly extensive. With that said, the 2024 Outback only gets a minor facelift, mainly only for the most rugged trim, the Wilderness variant.

In 2024, the Outback Wilderness becomes even more rugged with a few aesthetic modifications. The front fascia has been completely overhauled, now boasting a redesigned bumper that adds a layer of toughness to the wagon SUV’s appearance. This is complemented by a set of sleek LED fog lights, which not only enhance visibility but also add a touch of modernity to the vehicle’s overall design. However, the most notable change has got to be the more prominent front grille design that neatly ties the makeover together.

NOT JUST FOR CAR SHOPPING

The Subaru Outback is a standout vehicle with a unique and distinctive design, setting it apart from other cars in its class. It’s a rare wagon-SUV combination that excels in off-roading, making it a strong competitor against other vehicles such as the Honda Passport and Jeep Cherokee. Meanwhile, more rugged SUVs, such as the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota 4Runner, offer superior off-road capabilities but are less comfortable on pavement.

What to Expect With the New 2024 Subaru Outback?

Now that we’ve covered the 2024 Subaru Outback redesign, what can customers expect from the latest model year of this wagon SUV?

Some Optional Features Become Standard

One of the main highlights of the new 2024 Outback is that some previously optional features are now standard, but only for certain trims. For example, the Onyx Edition gets the standard 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system, which now syncs up with a Harman Kardon speaker system, complete with a 576-watt equivalent amplifier for a premium audio experience. Moreover, the Onyx Edition now generously includes a Power Moonroof and Reverse Automatic Braking as standard.

However, perhaps the best bang for your buck trim is the Outback Premium Edition. The Premium trim offers a significant upgrade from the base model, providing a range of additional features for a more comfortable and convenient driving experience. This includes a large 11.6-inch touchscreen, a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi to keep you connected on the go, heated front seats for those chilly days, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat to find your perfect driving position. Plus, with the bonus of more USB ports, you’ll have no trouble keeping all your devices charged and ready to use.

ARE SUBARU OUTBACKS RELIABLE?

If you’re thinking about getting an Outback, it’s normal to wonder if Subaru Outbacks are reliable or not. After all, it’s a popular vehicle, but that doesn’t always mean it’s an effective vehicle or one that will last as long as you want it to.

Under the Hood

The Outback offers two flat-four-cylinder engine options. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter that produces 182 hp, while a more powerful 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter engine is available as a performance upgrade. Both engines are carry-overs from the previous Outback. Both engines are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that emulates an eight-speed gearbox – which does an excellent job of mitigating engine noise. True to Subaru’s signature style, all Outback models come equipped with standard all-wheel drive.

The base engine of the Outback might leave you wanting in terms of performance. In a series of tests, the Outback Limited, equipped with the standard four-cylinder engine, took a leisurely 8.8 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.

If you’re looking for performance similar to the Honda Passport or Ford Edge, the optional turbocharged engine is your best bet. But it’s not all that bad for the base engine; the transmission is a saving grace that shifts swiftly and promptly.

Interior Features and Space

The interior of the 2024 Outback shares many similarities with the Subaru Legacy, which includes comfortable seating and good-quality materials. However, the interior layout can be rather plain and spartan, but it’s relatively functional and offers a pretty good seating height.

Starting from the Premium model and up, the Outback is equipped with dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and numerous USB ports for all your devices. For those seeking a touch of luxury, higher trim levels offer indulgent features such as ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and a power-adjustable front-passenger seat to elevate your driving experience.

However, the Outback truly shines when it comes to seating space. The rear seats have been upgraded to provide an additional 1.4 inches of legroom compared to the previous generation. Additionally, the rear cargo area is spacious, offering 33 cu-ft of storage space for all your gear and belongings.

The 2024 Outback offers two display options: dual 7-inch screens in the base model or a single 11.6-inch screen in all other trims. The dual-screen setup looks relatively low budget, so opt for the larger single display if possible. While the resolution of the 11.6-inch screen could be sharper, the navigation system and maps are intuitive. The large screen provides ample space for displaying maps, music, podcasts, and other information.

2024 Subaru Outback Availability

That wraps up the 2024 Subaru Outback redesign. If you’re looking for a complete redesign, we suggest waiting for the 2025 model year. The 2024 Subaru Outback is now available at your nearest dealership and starts at $28,895.
