The midsize 3-row SUV landscape has been dominated by stellar offerings from Japanese and Korean manufacturers recently, and deservedly so.

Last year, we witnessed the launch of the all-new Honda Pilot, a true game-changer in its segment. Not to be outdone, Toyota has unveiled the Grand Highlander this year, a competent SUV that provides rear passengers with more room to stretch out and offers a cavernous cargo space that puts the regular Highlander to shame. Then, there’s the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade SUVs that remain popular and highly rated.

During these impressive releases, the Chevrolet Traverse seemed to have been left in the dust. However, with the upcoming Chevy Traverse redesign, this midsize SUV may again find itself in the spotlight. Today, we discuss the Traverse nameplate’s third generation and the expected changes.

What’s New With the 2024 Chevy Traverse Redesign?

There’s plenty to get excited about the 2024 Chevy Traverse, but the main one is that it’s the start of a new generation of Traverse with a noteworthy facelift.

Exterior

With the third-gen Traverse, Chevrolet wisely holds onto the successful recipe that defines the second generation. And why not? The 2018-2023 Traverse was reasonably successful, garnering high road test scores thanks to its spacious and serene interior, delightfully comfortable ride, and agile handling. Its substantial size made it a viable alternative for drivers seeking the benefits of a full-sized SUV without the hefty towing capabilities.

If you didn’t like the previous generation’s minivan look, you’ll be pleased to know that the 2024 Chevy Traverse redesign looks more like a traditional SUV. With the third-generation Traverse, Chevrolet has sprinkled some Tahoe SUV magic, creating what exterior creative designer Tyler Moffett fondly dubs the “baby Tahoe” approach. It’s like the Traverse got a Tahoe-inspired makeover, and we’re here for it!

It’s not a significant departure from the old Traverse design, and it retains the same boxy profile of previous generations. The grille and corner air scoops with fog lamps have been transformed into bolder, more truck-like features, giving off a sense of ruggedness. The headlights are slimmer, while the taillamps have been sculpted to bring a more modern flair. As a result, the Traverse now looks more aggressive and assertive, which GM described as “a rugged, ready-for-anything presence.”

The redesigned C-pillar behind the second-row doors stands out as a particularly unique feature. It now boasts an intriguing puzzle-piece appearance, offering a fresh twist on the ubiquitous “floating roof” design in other SUVs, such as the Nissan Murano and Lexus RX. This new take adds a layer of visual intrigue and helps the Traverse stand out from the competition.

Interior

Many owners complained about the rather spartan cabin and infotainment systems of the old Traverse SUVs. Thankfully, the Traverse also received a significant glow-up on the inside.

One of the most significant upgrades to the vehicle’s in-car technology and entertainment is the “best in class” 17.7-inch diagonal color infotainment touchscreen. It’s standard on all trims, so you don’t have to opt for more expensive models to get the massive touchscreen. This sizable display also puts many of its contemporaries to shame, including the latest Honda Pilot’s 9-inch display.

THE MOST RELIABLE YEAR FOR THE CHEVY TRAVERSE

Which model is the most reliable year of Chevy Traverse? While the Traverse offers many attractive features and options like responsive handling, a quiet interior, and a spacious third row, not all of its model years are reliable.

If you’re a fan of physical buttons and knobs for controlling the infotainment system, you should be glad to know that it hasn’t been forsaken in the 2024 Traverse. The SUV thoughtfully retains physical controls for both volume and climate.

In addition, the 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster and six USB ports are standard. Moreover, the car also has a WiFi hotspot and wireless phone charger for those who need to stay connected while traveling. And if you need more storage, there’s a smartly designed pass-through under the center console that gives you extra space to store your little items. They are not groundbreaking add-ons, but they bring the Traverse into modern times.

Midsize 3-row SUVs are not exactly known for spacious third rows that can accommodate full-grown adults in relative comfort. The second-generation Traverse, however, broke the mold by providing ample space for adults to ride in comfort in the rearmost seats. Now, the third-generation Traverse is poised to carry on this legacy. As such, the base trim of the vehicle comfortably accommodates eight passengers, while the more premium trims offer seating for seven with luxurious captain’s chairs in the second row.

Under the Hood

The newest-generation Traverse promises more power and capability. The 2024 Traverse boasts a significant upgrade under its hood, swapping out the previous V-6 engine for a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit. This new engine delivers an impressive 315 hp, outperforming the old V-6 by five horsepower. It generates a torque of 317 lb-ft, marking a substantial increase of 51 lb-ft compared to its predecessor.

Chevrolet has replaced the previous nine-speed unit with a slick eight-speed automatic transmission in the latest Traverse model. The engine comes with the option of either front or all-wheel drive, which Chevy claims to be more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. With a combined rating of 21 mpg, the Traverse is both practical and powerful. It also has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs, depending on the configuration.

And for the first time ever, the Traverse is now available in the Z71 trim. Fans of the Silverado and Tahoe know that the Z71 designation means it’s an off-road-focused model, as opposed to being an appearance package. The Z71 stands tall with a one-inch higher ground clearance and boasts a marginally wider track, which should help significantly enhance the vehicle’s stability and handling.

In addition, the Z71 Traverse comes with exclusive selectable drive modes and features, including Hill Descent Control, Terrain Mode, and a standard trailering package.

Availability

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is set to hit the market in early 2024, with pricing details to be unveiled as we inch closer to its release date. With the Chevy Traverse redesign, experts predict that the 2024 model year will have a price increase but will stay true to Chevy’s long-standing reputation of delivering a good value proposition with its vehicles.
